Letter boxing for Visitors to Dartmoor - On the moors an in local buildings

Dartmoor and Letterboxing

Dartmoor letterboxing can be enjoyed by everyone and people come from all over the world to participate

BUT WHAT IS IT?

It is a bit like a treasure hunt - a walk on Dartmoor with the fantastic scenery and at the same time the fun of searching out the letterboxes.

There are thousands hidden across Dartmoor in all sorts of nooks and crannies. They are in waterproof containers and contain an ink pad, rubber stamp and a visitor book. There are all kinds of stamps, mainly commemorative, funny, quirky, illustrating wildlife on Dartmoor , or showing the site in some way.

Clues are oftern available to help find them, but it is not always easy! Now that letterboxing is so popular, there are books available and various websites with clues.

You will need a pen, a little book for the stamps and the usual walking gear. When a letterbox is found, the procedure is as follows. Stamp your notebook, and note with it the date and time. Put your details in the box's visitor book, pack up the box and replace carefully.

However you don't have to be a walker. They are now found in other locations, such as pubs, cafes, hotels, shops, attractions and even some ice cream vans – but you do have to ask! They are not on display.
