This part of Dartmoor is wonderful for walking; the panoramic views are spectacular. There are some fantastic riverside walks nearby, some in sheltered and wooded valleys, all delightfully unspoilt and often you'll have it all to yourselves. We are happy to lend maps and suggest some of our favourite places to explore around here and on both north and south coasts which are about an hours drive away. Access to many places in Cornwall such as the Eden Project is easy too. Peter Tavy is the nearest village. There is an award winning fifteenth century inn that serves really good meals and is dog friendly. There are many other good places to eat.
At Old Sowtontown we have a group of old stone farm buildings that over the years we have converted to provide a home for ourselves and two (soon to be three) self catering units. Well-behaved pets welcomed by arrangement in both properties. Stabling usually available so you can even bring your own horse on holiday; the riding from here is glorious.

The Barn (Sleeps 2 - 6)

This barn conversion has a large first floor room (33' x 16' approx) where the kitchen, dining area and living area are all in one open space, with wide-ranging views of the surrounding countryside. Downstairs there are three bedrooms (one with a double bed, one with twin beds and one with full size, top quality bunk beds), a bathroom and a small utility room with tumble drier, washing machine and second toilet. The original oak beams are left exposed.

The Shippen (Sleeps 2 - 4)

The Shippen has a most attractive open plan interior (35' x 12' approx) with a galleried bedroom and lots of natural stone and wood. The accommodation consists of a sitting room (which can be rearranged with 2 single beds), dining room / kitchen, bathroom and the galleried bedroom which has a double bed and sitting area with TV.

Almost all the conversion work here has been done single handed by Chris using environmentally friendly methods and materials whenever feasible. Visitors are welcome to see our latest installation - an Austrian designed log boiler that supplies heating and hot water to three of our buildings. Less sophisticated, but perhaps even more interesting is the methane gas collector made entirely from recycled materials; this provides some gas for us to cook on! We are committed to the Dartmoor Green Charter and supply eco friendly cleaning products etc for use in the self catering units.

Visitors are welcome to see our smallholding enterprise. We try to be as self sufficient as possible although being quite high up and close to open moor this is not always easy. We have a few Icelandic sheep and Golden Guernsey goats, both rare breeds and very beautiful. The goats are especially tame and we have kids most years; they are enchanting and great time wasters. We produce our own milk and cheese. There are hens and horses too.

For cycle enthusiasts we are well positioned being right on Route 27, a 102 mile route, much of which is traffic free, that joins the south and north coasts; there are many good circular routes from here too. Cycles may be hired locally or bring your own.
